Niki de Saint Phalle, Monstre du Loch Ness (détail), 1993, collection MAMAC, donation de l'artiste en 2001, photo AD/Ville de Nice, © 2022 Niki Charitable Art Foundation / Adagp, Paris
This monumental sculpture made for the exterior was installed in 2001 on the forecourt of the MAMAC.
This forecourt was baptized “Esplanade Niki de Saint Phalle ” on the occasion of the donation of 190 works granted by the artist to the City of Nice in October 2001.
An exhibition dedicated to this donation was presented at the museum from March 16 to October 27, 2002.
The MAMAC has one of the three largest collections in the world of this major 20th century artist and regularly pays tribute to Niki de Saint Phalle in a permanent room whose hangings are regularly renewed.
Loch Ness Monster, covered in mirrors and ceramics, is part of a series of works entitled The Wounded Animals.
It will be restored during the requalification of the museum, before being relocated in the new Paillon promenade.
