Prototype Improvised type « CLOUD » is an ephemeral structure created by the architect Yona Friedman. It is also a work, open to interpretation by the communities which decide to bring it into being.
Each group of volunteers implied is free to determine the shape and size of the cloud and even the materials used. Yona Friedman simply suggests the use of a « poor » or recycled material. Thus the community becomes an agent, conceiver and creator of a new cloud.
This project, with its poetic dimension, brings together different investigations carried out by Yona Friedman since the mid-70s.
The architect suggested reversing the traditional process of urban planning and habitat, taking the users, their needs and their way of living together as the starting point. This « self-planning » turns the traditional role of the architect on its head by putting him or her at the service of the community and its expectations. Friedman, at the same time, reflected on sustainable architecture and ecological issues and sounds the alarm about the growing scarcity of resources and the impact of waste produced by society.
The « cloud », synthesis of his research, is a collective adventure, an « achievable utopia ». To bring it into being, the MAMAC naturally has gathered over the period of eight weeks a community of people linked to the sea to echo the history of the Galerie des Ponchettes and the Baie des Anges.
