The City of Nice was delighted to show Peter Kim’s works at the contemporary gallery of MAMAC as indeed, in 2016, France celebrated Korea and notably the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries. This commemoration also reflected the longstanding history of the city as a patron of the arts.
Born in 1967 at Gwangju, South Korea, Peter Kim graduated from the École supérieure d’art et de design de Marseille-Méditerranée in the late 1990s. He has since moved to New York. The artist focuses on the repetition of lines and dots without seeking any effective rendering at first glance.
Quite the opposite, his approach reveals what time, souvenirs, the past as well as contemplation can offer us. In the paintings exhibited at MAMAC, the lines were woven into such an intricate tangle that they seemed to represent a vessel-like entity floating in mid-air.
