First exhibition in Brazil, at Casa Fiat de Cultura, of one of the largest collections of works by Niki de Saint Phalle, held by MAMAC, Nice, and enriched by a beautiful loan from the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
Niki de Saint Phalle (French/American, 1930-2002), one of the most unique artists of the second half of the century, burst onto the international art scene in the 1960s. Although self-taught, she was quickly recognized as an important figure in cutting-edge contemporary art, both in Europe and America. Niki de Saint Phalle used art as a form of rebellion against a patriarchal society and the traumas of childhood. She created a distinctive language of iconic forms such as her “Nanas”—unambiguous images of powerful femininity—which reflect her belief that art can change the world. Through her performances, bold sculptures, immersive public artworks, and playgrounds, she tackled important and profound social issues.
The works on display explore the world of Niki Saint Phalle, from her early Tir paintings, her exuberant Nanas, the fantastical world of her Tarot Garden, and her pioneering efforts to combat racism, gender inequality, and HIV/AIDS stigma.
